Piped Applique

By Sandra Hoefner

In the past few years, I would often look at a quilt pinned to my design wall and think that it needed just a flicker of a contrasting color here...and there...and there. When painting, an artist can simply add another stroke of paint. With a background in painting, adding a line of color with piping occurred to me, as I had used it for accents on clothing. I have been adding piping around applique patches for more than six years.

My method of applique may be a little different from the usual. I don't like the hard, flat look of fusible applique, so I have developed a method that combines freezer-paper applique and traditional hand techniques. A simple pattern for a heart and hand is included so that you can try my methods.

Sandra Hoefner is an award-winning quilt artist living in Palisade, Colorado. One of her quilts, The Day He Left for America, was QNM's Photo Finish in November 1999 (issue 317).
