Fool-proof Applique

 Invisible Hand Applique Stitching

The most commonly used hand stitch for applique is the invisible stitch, made at 1/16" or 1/8" intervals through the side fold of the turn-under allowance. Using thread that matches the fabric of the piece being applied, begin by pushing the threaded needle through the seam allowance from the backside; pull the needle completely through the fold. Next, push the needle through the background fabric even with the place where the needle came out. Move forward on the underneath side of the background fabric 1/16" or 1/8" and repeat the stitch. This technique hides the stitch in the fold along the edge of the patch and creates what looks like a small running stitch on the back. Give a little tug on the thread after each stitch, and knot the end on the back side.
